The film covers the extraordinary life of Alan Karlsson over most of his 100 years and is based on the novel 'The Hundred-Year-Old Man who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared' by Swedish writer Jonas Jonasson.

Alan Karlsson, bored by the prospect of a party at his old person's home to celebrate his 100 years, escapes through his window and has amazing adventures, and so continues to live much as he has over the previous 100 years. Both before and after the birthday, he meets and interacts with many historical and some imagined figures, such as Herbert Einstein, the dim-witted but lookalike brother of Albert Einstein.
