The French Spy is a silent drama based on the famous Hartlepool folklore. In the early 1800s, a French warship sank off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor was the ship's mascot - a monkey, resplendent in his French naval uniform. The townspeople captured, then tried the monkey and hung him as a ‘FRENCH SPY’.
