Taking money from work you have found yourself

Scott Allen
Actor

Hello.

What is everyone's view on agents that take say 10% from theatre work that you have found yourself? I feel I am with a fair agent. What are your views?

cheers

I think Alan's point makes sense. When you get an agent you enter a partnership with that person, they obviously believe in you as an actor and you have to believe in them as an agent.

Agent's are not there just to get you work, they have an understanding of contracts and, hopefully, some negotiating skills and they are there to manage you throughout your employment aswell.

If you are frustrated with your agent because he/she has not been getting you work, then you could agree a smaller cut for them - Ive done that with my Ex(lol).

All agents should have a list of work they have submitted for you and you may want to ask them to have a look to check that they have been doing thier job.

When I registered with my agent I said in the beginning that I didn't want them to take money from work I had found myself. I was not an expert. I was still learning, but I had heard actors complaining about this issue. I invest money in CCP, spotlight and I'm online everyday - so still a lot of work involved on my part.

This is a business deal at the end of the day and you have to look after your needs - no one else will.
