CRB checks

Hiya.

I'm looking for advice please on CRB checks/enhanced CRB checks for actors, specifically can we as self-employed people apply for our own?

I've not worked directly with kids or on a kids show since about 2004 prior to that I worked with the home office for a little while and had all the CTCs done

I'm currently a personal licence holder so have the basic disclosure Scotland thing but assume that's not enough.

Thanks all

Ange

You can apply yourself. It costs between £30 - £40. This is one link you can look at which will give youn all the info you need.

As self employed it can also be written off against tax. One big potential problem is you can get a CRB check when applying for one company but once you've finished with that one you might have to get another when applying for a different company even though your current one is valid for a year. But sometimes the validation is for the company you are working for. Can get pretty damned expensive.
Check first before you apply for one. MAke a point of telling tehm it's for acting work and get confirmation of any information from them in writing if they tell you that's the only one you will need for multiple companies.

Best to err on the side of carefulness.

Good luck. Frank

You can't apply for the CRB check you are talking about yourself.
It has to be applied for by a registered organisation wanting to employ you.

It might be worth noting that the CRB will soon be known as the DBS (Discolure and Barring Service)which might help with searching for more info.

so im a little confused....

If you want a CRB check, you can ONLY get one if it is through a company you are working for? and Not an individual even if you are self-employed?

There are a couple of jobs I would like to apply for here on Casting Call Pro but cannot apply for because they require a CRB - but I cannot get a CRB unless a company gets it for me ? So therefor cannot get the job ?

I wrote off to a registered organisation (see below) and also spoke to Exams officer Josh Chelms, he then sent me via post CRB disclosure application pack with the following : guidelines, application form, post office verify form and freepost envelope.
Within two weeks I had my CRB.

Yes its very difficult to get a CRB without having one done for you via a company.
I have just had another one done for a new job it has only taken a week am just waiting for the certificate.
There should be a way for self employed people to do it though I think

There are some charities and umbrella companies that help self-employed people apply for CRB checks through them.

Hi,
If you get into volunteering you can get a CRB done through your local Voluntary Action Centre - lots of towns have one but if not google it. They will do you one for free but you need to be volunteering somewhere. The VA centre will have a list of opportunities where you can go and volunteer, but you do need to be committed. Some youth clubs and places like that need volunteers so it would just be an odd evening per week maybe? Look into it, it enhances your CV too :)

You can apply for a basic disclosure certificate yourself. There are some websites which charge more than others.
Does anyone know how to upload the DBS certificate to casting call Pro? I have recently had mine updated and I can't find an FAQS section on the casting call Pro website, or any information about uploading it. Thanks
