Spotlight

Ash Hussain
Actor

Hello,

Hope you're all okay.

I was wondering if you could help, I am finding it really difficult to join Spotlight because I have no professional credits and every agent / casting director/assistant wants to be a member on there. (I am currently unrepresented; but I am knocking on doors to find the right agent).

Can anyone please recommend how I can get credited? How can I get my first TV role? Day player role even? I tried looking for a TV role on this site but could not find anything.

I'm aware Spotlight changed its criteria earlier this Summer, but I still need two professional credits. I didn't go to a full-time drama school. I currently attend evening acting classes and started this year in March, I'm aware I have to wait 2 years to be a member on Spotlight.

Just wondered how I can be a member on Spotlight sooner?

I am based in Manchester.

Would appreciate your help.

Ash

I’m in a similar boat to you and have been advised to work on the short films Mandy advertises with no. pay. Do 2/3 of them to get your credits.

Agents - apply to agents on the Mandy site. I have with no response but we should both keep at it.

Good luck!

Hi Ash,

My advice is to find directors who are producing short films and seek to get onboard with them, this is what helped me considerably,

Best regards

It is seen as fairly difficult to obtain an agent without Spotlight membership, but there are some that will consider you if your casting type and talent is in demand, this can be particularly true in the commercial world.
Other than this, it really is a marathon and not a sprint, attend as many workshops as you can afford, get your face out there and network with casting agents/agents and grow from there. Best of luck.

As has been said - it is a marathon, it takes time. Definitely recommend applying for film school projects and some free / lower-paid projects. Apply for as all that apply and build the CV that way. Yes network, take courses, do workshops and over time you'll build a CV that ensures Spotlight membership and this will help enormously with searching for an agent. An agent wants to take on talent that they can place/sell. You having proof that you can get work and be hired increases your commercial viability in their eyes.

Hi Ash,

I hope you are well. If you have found a way to get onto spotlight when you get to read this then you can discard this message.

I found that there is a course called Rebound Productions. They have an insta page and a website for you to check them out. It's a course that offers new writers an opportunity to write material that will then be work shopped and then eventually picked to perform in a showcase by yourself and the other actors on board. Although, you have to pay for the course, it can also be classed as a credit and I too used this course as one of my credits to be accepted onto Spotlight. It's also a great opportunity to be able to invite Agents and Casting Directors to the showcase.

I hope this helps.

Hi Harry, this sounds like an excellent opportunity, however, I am based in Manchester therefore will be difficult to commute everyday and plus I don't know anybody from London. At the moment, I am networking and connecting with people, I'm on Twitter and Instagram - ash202089.

Luckily I've managed to get an agent, they successfully took me on last month without me being a member on spotlight.

I've attended a couple of workshops in London which have been very useful. I'm due to attend one on 14th January with Run at it shouting.

Thank you for the other actors for giving me advice.

This is a difficult one. I was once told to be on spotlight, but then spotlight were very picky, and demanded you have at least two lead roles in feature films. But how can you even get to be an extra, if no one will represent you. To get some credibility, there are many adverts on here, that require people for adverts, some or many are for charity, but at least that will give you some experience and something to put on your résumé. Some acting workshops, get their students bit parts to help build their portfolio. I myself have played SANTA for 40 yrs now, and irrespective of that, was declined to act as SANTA. I had already put myself forward to be in a NON PAID role for an ad for charity, and donated my time and services. Then, Santa and his elf, were taken ill, and I was phoned, and asked if I was available. - I know I was only a seat filler, but still it was a PAID role, and the Freebie along with the Santa role, went on my résumé. Then I put the company that hired me on behalf of their client, as my representative, as they then took my details and ´registered´ me on their books.

It is good to look at which companies are advertising, and checking their websites, as the smaller ones, don´t mind you having many companies representing you, as one company may specialize in high profile clients like: BBC, itv, 20th Century Fox, Netflix etc., while others supply extras and models only, and others do performing arts e.g. people who walk around as Storm Troopers, Peppa Pig, or Frosty the Snowman etc.

So put your name forward, and just register with them on-line, and have them contact you. It will happen, and if you have a few freebies, put them on your CV, just don´t say it was a freebie, as they might not classify it as a CREDIT. But let´s face it, acting is acting, whether you are doing it for charity or not. Some people started as stagehands sweeping the floor. Others got involved doing work for free. MY advice: Just go for it, and May the fourth be with you.

Hello Ash,

Ah that’s gutting! Hopefully there’s some course in Manchester that offer something similar. I always recommend networking! I’ve booked some jobs this year purely on the basis of knowing people involved.

Amazing! Congratulations on your representation! Hopefully they’ll be able to help get credits that will get you on to spotlight. Are your agents in Manchester or London?

I loved it when I did Run At It Shouting. It was sooo useful! Just make sure you’ve thought of some questions to ask at the end of the session in order to get the most out of it.

Have you got Instagram? Would be amazing to connect on there too!

I wish you all the best!

The odd thing is, that 'some' want you to be on spotlight, and yet those who have represented me in the past, always say, that London is the place to be, but those in London, say that they apply and aren't picked. Yet most of the actors I speak to, say that the majority of the work they get, is through Mandy and little known agencies. - Go figure!
