Derren Brown: Apocalypse

Dan Egg
Actor

Hey all,
Never really ventured into these forums before, after watching the great Derren Brown's latest offering tonight, I was just wondering if anyone knew how the acting parts in his programmes get cast?
I see a few folk on here have worked on previous shows..

Was wondering the same thing. The Scottish guy was good, although I thought some of the people in the bus were going to give the game away before it had even started. Some didn't even notice, and others looked like they were about to start a Shakespearean soliloquy!

I auditioned for the ambulance driver role but they decided to go with a 6ft 2in bald man from Scotland which is fine because at least it wasn't the acting which was the deal breaker !

You auditioned? Where were the roles advertised and by whom?

Of course it's fake! Like WWE Wrestling, it's entertainment with the whole thing carefully choreographed, rehearsed, and editted carefully to look like it's a reality show!

Doesn't mean I wouldn't like to be part of one of these as creating a character and holding our audience within their fictional reality is what we do isn't it?

Forbes;
I signed an NDA & therefore cannot reveal much,(Even though it's now airing) apart from the fact all the info you require is on the credits!
Best,
C.

I have taken in part in such programmes as "who is the real...?" hosted by Bradley walsh!

It was a long but fun day and scary/thrilling to be filmed improvising like hell in front of a live audience!! The money was rubbish to be frank.....but good exposure I feel.

That was cast direct from a reel ie: They just trawled spotlight and so to my point....I think much of the casting of this type of prog is cast in this way? No?

Just ring the production office and ask to speak to casting or the like...someone wil give you the info I daresay.

Hi Forbes, I was up for an ident for it; it was cast by Ch4 and came thru my agent who'd subbed me via Spotlight. I suspect it was probably the same for the prog itself, judging by Pole's comment.

... It wasn't the same casting process as the ident !

"...Casting Call (Pro) which is a site that people go on if they want to do bits of extra work or acting jobs or appear in tv audiences and things..." (Derren Brown)

Thank you Ewan for the link in the previous post.

I didn't see the show….but when I am told there is no camera trickery and there clearly is…..or I am told these are genuine volunteers not actors….when they are not…..the show becomes what it is….an utter fake. Then I think to myself the only reason I am trying to watch this is to see how it is done. That is interesting for me to do….though with Darren Brown….I think some of his stuff is weak and a blatant lie. He was interviewed on a chat show after the Fake bullet scam trick he pulled on either Jersy or Gurnsey I think? ….and the Island police where he did the stunt had categorically stated that under no circumstances were real ammo and or real guns used and nobody would had been permitted on the Island using them. When put to Darren he just smiled weakly. His lottery prediction stunt was unravelled very quickly too and in fact contained several camera trickery and delay mistakes in the continuity. Apart from that many of these so called TV illusions are so stupid and impossible, to be taken seriously.

He is a great showman…..but he's making mugs out of people who thinks he is real.

However, the interesting thing about the links given within this thread…..is that it would suggest that any Tom Dick or Harry, can join this casting site. It was also described in a way that CCP must find …well …galling at the very least?

My CCP subscription is cancelled after mulling it over last night.

Not all Derren Brown says or does on camera is fake and thank you Mark for your post on this thread.

Be seeing you!

Well Stu....I would say all illusionists "are" fakes...but then that is stating the obvious!! Clever and entertaining granted…..liars….maybe too strong a word, but I think apt on many occasions.

I would not let Darren Brown put you off....some of the castings on here are fine....just too few to make it truly worthwhile….but one should be able to get enough work to cover the membership fee if little else.

I think one has to be realistic as to why one is a full member of CCP...I have my own reasons, and its not all to do with sourcing creditable acting work! I am sure others have theirs, but at the end of the day, just be realistic and professional...that's all we can do.

100% agree with you Mark but some of Derren's fan's are so desperate to believe he is for real that anyone who points out the obvious fakery is labelled a skeptic or a hater. I don't hate Derren, I think he is very good at what he does very smart and very charismatic but he admits himself that he is a confidence trickster. In fact he often actively tells people not to believe what he is saying in his shows! So forgive me if I take it with a pinch of salt when he says he doesn't use stooges or actors.

I've had a big debate about this with people on my facebook page but to be honest if you do believe Steve was a real person and not an actor then how can you possibly find it entertaining watching someone suffer like that? Just think how betrayed and used you would feel if your whole family were in on it and decided to put you through this ordeal because they thought you were wasting your life. Completely unethical, not to mention dangerous. So I for one am very glad it was all fake because I don't want to see car crash TV. It reminds me of those people who see someone suffering or being beaten up and instead of helping them they get out their phones and video it.
