Getting copy of Student Film - TVU
I appeared in a film for a student from Thames Valley University at the beginning of January. I know the film was completed and submitted to the college the following week, but despite speaking to the on the phone and by email, I still haven't got a copy. I am thinking of approaching the university, and think I should do it now before the end of the academic year. Has anyone had any success with this approach? Many thanks.
Yeah, I had no idea he had left - I'm sure he told me he was a first year. If he dropped out that would tie in with his unreliability. Don't worry though, I'm not giving up. At the very least I can make people aware of the attitude Thames Valley is taking towards this issue. Thanks everyone for all the advice and encouragement.
.....please CCP...do "not" close this thread!! Discussions like this take place on the Equity forum all the time, as you know, so there is no reason, that any of us can see, to close down an informative thread, aimed at trying to stop your members getting themselves in a mess like this.
Or am I the only one that feels that way?

No, Mark ... you're not on your own, Old Son ..... I've got your back !!.
Have just received an email from the student saying that he is sending me a copy asap, so fingers crossed!
Bombard them with emails the student with emails.
Remind the staff that it is part of your contract.
Also contact any of the other actors and see if the have a copy.
Yes - I'm just about to contact Bournemouth Uni about some students I did a film for last December. I've not really bothered to chase it up as - well - from what I saw on the day it's not going to make my showreel. However, when they ignore emails and fail to deliver ... the school needs to know :o)
I'm not going to hold my breath on this one.
Find postal addresses and do registered post, this is much better than emails...if emails don't produce the results. Also you can check if the letter was def delivered or not. Much stronger evidence in a court case than relying on emails...but yes, emails in the first instance should be enough. However, virus checkers can be very tough on genuine emails and your email may not get answered as it went straight into a junk email bib.
junk bib??? .....I mean bin!!!

Worse than that, Annie ... A Kempnerism.
A disease dreaded by mankind ... and brought on by a drought of Student DVD's.
A quite virulent strain, I'm afraid !!.
Fingers crossed I may have my copy by the weekend! Will keep you posted.
Mary
I emailed the Dean at Bournemouth Uni yesterday re a video filmed on 5th December last year.
Had a reply from the course tutor (and an apologetic phone call) this morning and a terse email from the Film's Producer later ... promising the DVD but somewhat upset that I'd felt the need to contact the school ;o)
OK, we may now get the DVD but it's still not nice to have had to chase them.
The tutor insisted that their students are lectured on the importance of DVDs to thier actors.
I think the tutor is probably being honest in this case, Rob - Bournemouth generally has a pretty high reputation as a screen training institution and whenever I've shot with students there, I have been impressed with the level of commitment and professionalism. I suspect that the course tutors were *genuinely* upset on your behalf when they heard about this behaviour (as they tend to be at the reputable film schools when students are playing up, and mistreating their actors): the student, as ever, was clearly hoping to 'get round to it' when they felt like burning the DVD, and started to worry at precisely the point at which your complaint seemed destined to dock some of their marks for the coursework!!
Second rate film schools, it must be said, tend to prove themselves at the point at which you email demanding restitution - and the mail 'mysteriously' goes unreplied to -or the reply suggests it is your responsibility to chase up the student concerned, rather than the schools'!
Lee - In truth the vast majority of students have treated me very well.
But in any future "expenses paid showreel shoots" I'll be getting the name and email address of the course tutor up front :o)
Just to let you all know I got the film today. I had to go to the sorting office and pay £1.10 as apparently a first class stamp isn't enough to send a DVD in a Jiffy Bag, but all's well that ends well. Next week I'm going to go after the £160 the taxman owes me! :)
Stamp: yes, that's what could be described as a scam by the Post Office (Note CCP admin: careful choice of words). It seems almost random what gets through and what does not. The £1 is the least of it - it's having to travel 5 miles each way to the nearest collection depot galls me.
Mary....now you got it.....WHAT'S IT LIKE?!!!!
Well done for getting it...and a good case and example what you get when you chase these things up. I know it doesn't always work...but you did it!
Update on Bournemouth Media School Film.
The Dean forwarded the complaint to the...
Course Tutor who phoned the students at home ...
[getting the director out of bed at 11:00 am!]
Anyway - 3 days later the actors, including myself, have the DVDs ... as promised 7 months ago :o)
I'm now back to a 100% record on DVD delivery. The film was a lot better than I anticipated too. Probably won't make my showreel (it's a comedy).
Don't think the group will use me again though :o)
Rob
The film's quite good, although the camera appears to be a bit shaky in places and sometimes the background sound is louder than the voices. I should be able to get something out of it for my showreel though.
