IMDB ???

Russell Shaw

Hi, I would like to know what peoples thoughts are on IMDB membership?

I understand you accept the 2 week trial, you give them your credit card details..After the initial 2 wk trial..you are given the option of paying the monthly membership....

is it worth it? what are the benefits? The only credit on IMDB i have is 'Scummy Man'.

ps. I have been pondering the idea of IMDB membership for a while..any feedback would be great?

thanks, Russ

If you are going to quote, at least do it accurately. The full posting was as follows ---

We use IMDB as a way of verifying lesser known actors or to get the contact details for hte management of more established actors. I normally run a search on the productions listed on your resume if i get your profile from CCP or other similar sites to determine the extent of your experience. If it is not IMDB listed, i know it is a project that never had a screening at a credible festival or release because they are very strict about the productions that they list and you cannot get your film listed by simply paying.

That way we generally decide who is a professional actress and who has credentials from only student/friend 'type' productions. Hope this helps but it makes no difference if your pic is on or not. You will find that it is mostly the new talent who go to the trouble of putting thier pics because IMDB will normally link stills from films or thumbnails for wireimage for the more popular actors.

In a nutshell, to the casting director it does not really matter.

We = me and the people that i work with and yes IMDB plays an important part in ascertaining experience by our criteria which we are entitled to have because we have had to deal with people listing non-existent productions befores both cast and crew to make their cv's look good. But as said during that post, whether you are on IMDB or not to me it does not matter to the casting director. I like to know how much experience someone has had or who they have worked with when working with them because in my experience it makes the process easier. I find that IMDB gives me a lot of information to work with as PART OF the recrutiment process. You do not have to like the fact that we use it extensively. Everyone has their methods.

Well, one feature I did The Johnna Mann Story is listed on IMDB but as far as I know has never seen the light of day apart from a trailer at Cannes - but the short film that was nominated for a BAFTA (Can't Stop Breathing) and the short that won the comdey section in the Portobello Film Festival (Face Ache) are not mentioned there - neither is the Crimewatch episode. I know I could put them on myself but I'm not forking out another load of cash for something that doesn't really seem worthwhile. While my agent insists that I'm in Spotlight (and quite rightly so) he has never mentioned IMDB.
Cheers

Exactly. Filmmakers are the ones who scramble to get their productions on to IMDB not actors. It is called the Internet Movie Database not the Actors Record database. It is a reference tool for the existence of productions and it is extensive but by no means exhaustive. However their stringent listing criteria makes you KNOW that a production EXISTS. It helps in recruitment to minimise BOGUS APPLICATIONS. I have never heard of someone going to IMDB to look for an actress. They will post to SAG, Equity or one of the many other talent databases but they go to IMDB to check if a production exists and the market activity. To ensure that that informaiton is available there is not the responsibility of the actor but the filmaker.

One last time, it makes no difference if you are on IMDB or not but if a production is listed and you are listed within the cast or crew credits it goes a long way to confirm that the production exists especially if it is a small scale production that we are not likely to have read about in any of the trade press. It does not mean that the film will do well.

An actor friend mentioned this site to me so I typed my name in and was surprised to see stuff I'd completely forgotton about; they even made a point of mentioning that I'm sometimes credited under a mispelling!

Is this useful? Perhaps.

I think I've found a way of updating IMDB with a credit that wasn't on there.
There was a celebrity in one of the films I made, so I filled up the update section on his page informing them about the film, I gave them different links on the internet where they talked about the film in question and a full cast list (me included).
If everything goes well, I should be in IMDB shortly (once they have verified that the info is true)
It didn't cost me anything.
I'll let you know if it worked.
(fingers crossed- the end of the problem)

I've received an email from them saying that it will take about 2 weeks before it is processed.

Cool. Might go in and try to do that with a couple of mine - nothing ventured etc.
