Voice Over Equipment Advice

Hello lovely people!
I am currently getting a bit more VO work and I've accepted that current microphone does not cut it! I was wondering if anyone can give advice & suggestions for good quality microphones and equipment.
Thank you in advance :)

Hey Ama,

I would recommend the Rode NT1-A Microphone; it is an excellent microphone at a reasonable price. As per equipment to record, you could buy a Zoom recorder or any device with phantom power option to power the microphone with an XLR wire.

Hope this helps you ;-)
Cheers

Hi Ama.

One thing to check before spending money on a microphone is your audio interface. You’ll need one that’s compatible with your intended microphone (not just if it’s xlr connected, as this is pretty standard) because you can ruin a mid to high range microphone’s output by having an AI that can’t process your mic well if at all, and you’ll end up having to spend more money on an AI.

I started with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. (2i2 basically 2 input, 2 output. As I’m a musician also I sometimes add guitars / pianos as well as vocals, but for pure VO the solo version is more than suffice) with a very basic entry level mic. I now own a Neumann U87 (v high end microphone!) and the Scarlett still works brilliantly!

I hope that helps! If you need any further advice let us know!

Thank you so much Tony. It’s clear I’ve still got a lot of research to do as I didn’t know any of this! I’ll get to work!! Thanks again !

Hi Ama

If you're serious about upgrading, here are 2 sources of iincredible VO knowledge, thaf are totally free:

1. The booth junkie YouTube channel
2. VOBS podcast. This one is a little more tech heavy but the advice is solid.

I've followed both for years and avoided alot of pit falls along the way as a result.

Happy googling :)
