Whats going on on this site ??

I apply for 150 plus jobs since January , which all seemingly dont even want to contact me in any way shape or form . Most of my so called profile views aren't by employers , they come up as random searches by online bots . Then all of a sudden my profile is viewed by three members in the space of a day or so , who as far as i know i have no connection with . One of the people allegedly viewing my profile is an actress listed as playing age 2-5years old . Whats a 5 year old doing browsing profiles ? More than likely its a parent or guardian using the site to promote their child , if thats the case , surely the young actress would be better served by promotion solely through a children's agency , not on a mainly adult acting website .

Or am i being overly delicate with regards to child protection ? Lets face it , facebook is supposed to look after its members , look how thats turned out . Online stalking , abuse ,both racial and sexual in nature . But im getting viewed by someone using a childs profile to do so . Does anybody else find this all odd and worrying , or is it just me .

I had a child view me the other day too. Was it a blonde, female child? I didn't think it was odd but now I am wondering if it is the same profile... coincidence?

Yes it was indeed a blonde child . Its either a young child logging herself in Mmmm or its someone using a young childs profile to search through profiles . For what purpose ? And all the other people allegedly looking at my profile , have candidate underneath their profile pics . Whats this candidate in reference too ?

Ah candidate . I guess this must be general term for people with profiles on the site . Ive got so used to never being viewed by anyone but online bots , I've forgotten what it means to have your profile viewed

I have no idea why but expect it is the same person. If you and I were the same casting bracket it would make much more sense. Yes I think Candidate is someone on the site.

I agree David - I’ve applied for loads since joining recently and heard nothing from anyone ever - even free roles or where a message comes in saying the “casting director thinks you’ll be a good fit” I’d be interested to know if anyone gets paid work from this site. It’s more trouble than it worth - & leaves you doubting your ability but I’ve done 2 self tapes this week through my agent so I’m not that bad.

I've applied for countless castings on here, and I've done maybe 9-10 things. I've been paid for one job (flat £60 fee), which barely begins to pay for the annual Mandy fee. Starnow costs £29 for six months, which that one paid job would've given me a whole year's membership.

Having said that, most of my castings were speaking parts, two of which were lead roles and most of the others were 1 or 2 scenes. All were student productions, therefore unpaid.

When my Mandy membership expires, I doubt I'll renew it because I've actually made more money through StarNow, which is a third of the price of Mandy. I also use Backstage, especially since it offered a free six-month trial to UK members - but it's expiring soon, and I doubt I'll renew.

I understand websites need to make money, but actors are the ones with the least amount of money, yet we're the ones expected to pay the most to use these sites!

That’s helpful to hear thanks Jason -yeah I’m a fan of star now too since it first started in New Zealand and I notice they are getting better and better roles now and limit freebies.plus the website is more user friendly. I’m still on the free intro version to Mandy. I’m thinking why would I pay for this site which offers free roles and I can’t even get auditioned for them ‘? It’s just depressing !! I’m wondering if it’s one of those “upgrade and then people can see you” things ?? And all we are doing is bulking out the numbers to make it look attractive ??? So it’s good to know you’ve at least had responses and roles from it!

I hate the title star now , because it seems to reek of amateur , but quite frankly I’m getting fed up of getting absolutely no responses to anything I apply for . Only yesterday I got a email for a no money job via this site .

I hadn’t applied for the particular project., it was someone sifting trough profiles to fill a role . So I can hardly attribute it to anything I or the site have managed to do for me .

I’ve now applied for around 160 jobs on here since January , with less than 3 genuine replies for all my applications . I’m so disillusioned With the whole process , that I’m seriously considering ditching my profile altogether .

The pay rates are sinking faster than the titanic , what people expect me to bring to projects is a joke . I mean £70 per day , to learn a script , do a days filming , feed yourself , pay your own tax . I’ve done average days of extra work where I’ve earned £30-70 plus , simply for turning up on the day .

Okay soap box away . What can I tell you I’m having a bad time , which is not helped by being treated like an idiot , who will jump through hoops for less than a wage which will be realistic .

When your paying £250 for updates pictures , paying monthly fees for Mandy , paying spotlight fees , equity fees and someone comes along offering you £70 a day or less , you really have to bite your tongue . Which il having great difficulty doing right now .

    My latest job application

Hi, Sounds like an interesting project .Please feel free to view my showreel. Should you wish to know more , then i can be contacted via the site ,or by email [email protected]. If you’ve cast the role , then so be it . However I am available for filming on the 3rd . My fee is £100 pd . This is due to the fact I’m paying tax on any money made as a self employed actor . Although , this is more than the fee you have listed , there are a number of factors you should consider. I did three years training to be an actor. My spotlight fees per year are close to £200 . My updates pictures cost me £250 . My Mandy subs are over £24 per month , and my equity fees this year are over £160.00 . So please don’t think I’m being greedy asking for £100 pd . I’m not. cheers Dave L

i know my figures for all the things i listed are out , but their close enough for someone to understand why their wages are way to low . Good luck to everybody else who is not willing to accept £70 per day

"I hate the title star now , because it seems to reek of amateur"... and this site is called "Mandy" lol, which sounds like an Essex Girl. I honestly don't care what a website is called, so long as I can get work from it.

I used to do photography (2006-2012), but I gave up in the end for several reasons, one of which was the fact that amateurs were coming along and offering their services for free. Anyone and everyone called themselves a photographer, just because they owned a camera.

The film/TV industry is no different. People come along, some with actor training, some without. You get models who "want to break into screen acting", who claim that modelling is akin to 'performing' (on some levels, yes - but generally they are not the same). You basically get 90% of people who are willing to do it all for free.

Now, I don't think doing things for free is bad if you're starting out, want to build a portfolio, and gain more experience. We've all been there. But it really is annoying when you see commercials in the UK offering £250 buyouts; whereas in the USA, similar commercials offer a $5,000 buyout.

The situation will never get better. It's the same in the music industry I've discovered... lots of musicians and singers get paid peanuts or not at all. Yes the recording studios are making a mint; and the publishers, well, they can all go to hell for all I care.

Mmmm although I considered Mandy a strange name for a website , its a name which is ambiguous . Its not offering the flaming star of fame to light you up in the night sky , which to be honest , by its current performance , is probably a good thing.

Star now sounds like a children's acting agency , for gap toothed children promoting Milky bars . I don't really know how you managed to connect the name Mandy to Essex .Although , not being a follower of football , I dont recall a reference to a slew of footballers wives by the name of Mandy .

Barry Manilow captured the Mandy market , & she was a woman with enough class , for him to write a song about her . although the original lyrics were Brandy . so make of that what you will .

I don’t want to be a moaner in mopseyville but it is helpful to know it’s not just me. This site was “casting call pro” before changing its name to Mandy if that helps but from reading this I think I’m going to search elsewhere. I get more from twitter!! Star Now is improving - occasional feature films on there, and the user interface is so much better. I think also you have to look at the quality of jobs coming from spotlight to see what the industry is doing at the moment and take that into consideration. Thanks for your guidance - Amberli

Mandy (CCP) used to be much stricter about vetting profiles, now pretty much anyone can join. I honestly believe that applications just aren't getting seen because there are so many, would you look at all 400 applications if the first 10 were completely unsuitable/inexperienced? I get loads more on StarNow plus if you are professional they award you a 'pro' badge and you applications go to the top. I've also spoken to various casters, and they find Mandy confusing and difficult to navigate, so if they don't use Spotlight they put it on StarNow.

That's really useful to hear your views and feedback Catherine. I've never been on Starnow, but I'm thinking of going over. Like you, I believe it's most likely the volume of applications from Mandy actors that is a major factor on whether you get considered or not. I do think too that just about anyone can get on here. There's so many badly paid jobs on here now - £60/£70 per day jobs (some of which might only be a one day job and they want self tapes! And no doubt, they'll get them too). I like this aspect about being given a 'pro badge' with Starnow. Of course, it might not be for me, but nothing ventured as they say. I'll do a bit more research. Thanks.

    Hmm,

Maybe you are all really poor actors and are not good enough for the jobs you apply for. Only skilled actors like myself will get work here.

Over the last 12 months I have applied for 10-12 jobs and all of them without exception.... failed to even reply. Damn, that makes me crap too.

CCP used to generate good work, I got my first feature film and leicester square red carpet through CCP but lately nothing. The mails I get 'Matching your profile' are way off the mark, today I got one recommending I apply for a lookalike role as Melania Trump.

(can't see a way of posting the mail here but I did screen-shot it and shared it with a few friends who asked if I was really paying for this service) Well, maybe not much longer.
