Rebecca, has brought up something that we are missing within 'The Green Room' and that is a 'In Memoriam' section, where we can celebrate with fellow actor's the lives and achievements of colleagues sadly no longer with us.
I read recently of the passing of that great character actor Harry Towb on the 24 July 2009.
Harry, in a distinguished career spanning over 60 years starred in numerous television programmes including Z Cars, The Avengers, Home James, Moll Flanders, Heartbeat, Casualty, and The Bill.
I personally always loved his American accents, when he would play a villain in the likes of 'The Avengers' (Being originally from Larne, Co Antrim, Harry's Northern Ireland brogue suited an American accent so well)
He will be sadly missed and a great loss to the profession.
CCP Team - Is this request for a new section within your powers to do?
Yes, sad, and all of which is true - but he wasn't Hitchcock! Or Bergman, or Welles, or Huston, or...
No wish to rattle cages - merely a call for some perspective!
That's a confusing statement .... So we shouldn't remember or discuss someone that entertained us because he wasn't Hitchcock?
Let's hope your family dont feel that way when your time comes, "Hmmm, well yes, but he wasn't exactly cousin Harry, lets just keep some perspective and not mourn too much"
I dont believe anyone here mentioned he was the best of the best of whatever .... just that his movies were iconic, which, they were.
Weird Science and Ferris Buellers Day off were iconic films of that time.
They are refered to all the time in other movies.
Maybe Hughes was the Hitchcock of the 80s?!
My point was just that, he died recently (Hitchcock etc .. did not) and so we are choosing to discuss and remember him and others because it is current and we felt an affinity with his movies. End of story.
There doesn't have to be a "valid" reason to do that and popping in simply to put down the thread is unnecessary and unhelpful. Just leave us to it.
If he doesn't live up to other's standards, that's fine too, everyone is entitled to their own opionion, by all means say "I dont think he deserves to be revered compared to Hitchcock etc .." that is a completely valid statement.
Just dont disparage that other people may think he's the best thing since sliced bread or whatever and call for perspective. OUR perspective is that we want to remember him and say he was great, that is what this thread was about.
Start your own "I don't think John Hughes was as good as Hitchcock thread" and have a good ol' debate there.
Sorry, rant over ..... just feeling a bit frustrated with all the negativity and subtle put-downs directed at each other on this forum lately.
Not personally directed at you Mr Goodwin, although you seem to be bearing the brunt, apologies for that, I am misdirecting my frustration before I implode! Brace yourself :o)
.... I'm off to fight crime and injustice for all the people of London now... up, up and awaaaaay!
Just to let you know, since my last reply I have sent a message to Chris in the CCP team asking for advice about a new forum heading as per above...I'm still waiting for a response.
Jonathan, normally I'm 100% behind what you say, but on this occasion I'm on Leigh's side...sorry, mate
I think everyone's comments have been respectful, genuine and appropriate and in the words of Rudyard Kipling from the refrain of his poem 'Recessional'
and nobody's mentioned 'planes trains and automobiles'? funniest film ever. Yeah sad loss
