The government has now decided to remove Class 1 National Insurance, for performers and musicians etc. from April 2014.

According to 'The Stage' - "Low-earning actors ‘most at risk’ from HMRC tax reforms."

"Low-earning performers who are not in regular work will be most at risk of losing out on benefits under tax reforms that reclassify entertainers for National Insurance purposes, it has been claimed."

See this link: http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/2013/10/low-earning-actors-risk-hmrc-tax-reforms/

According to 'Broadcastnow.co.uk - "HMRC revamps law on NICs"...

"UK production companies could save millions of pounds after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) revealed it will change the law to ensure they don’t have to pay National Insurance contributions (NICs) of 13.8% for actors and talent."

That means it will be harder to get job seekers allowance - for actors out of work!

This decision will cost the government millions, at a time when they claim they cannot afford to protect actors from bogus agencies...

Pull the other one!!!

Well, I think most actors are self-employed, so couldn't pay class 1 NICs anyway.

Surely. The idea is, to work harder to stay employed not sign on.Anyway the
"profesion" is too full of mediocre wannabees who should be doing something else anyway......but then again I could be very wrong!!!!

NO more NI deducted at source from theatre and Beeb work? Hurrah! Bring it on! Just spent months getting a big refund of overpaid Class 4 NI for my husband because of the annoying classification of some work as employed for NI purposes and the lack of clarity on the subject. Most of HMRC don't understand the system, let alone actors, and it's very very easy to pay twice. And also for those who work a lot in theatre, all NI being calculated AFTER deductions is very much a good thing. This is long overdue IMO

For me, I'm entirely self employed and never pay Class 1 anyway, just Classes 2 and 4. I should think a lot of people are the same.
