I co-produce The Sitcom Mission and we recently posted an ad asking for actors to submit to us. In our ad we included the words: 'ABSOLUTELY VITAL please only apply if you have a showreel/voicereel or have worked with us before.' Pretty unequivocal, eh? I've just opened my tenth application from an actor with no showreel, no voicereel and who is completely unknown to us.
Don't do it. You won't be remembered as 'enterprising', you'll be forever tagged as 'can't read'.

What chance do they have of reading a script, if they can't read the brief?
I see it a lot on LinkedIn with voice-over jobs. Someone posts a listing, and then loads of posts pop up with, 'My demo is here', when the listing clearly sets out the audition process. I used to help these people by pointing out the poster's instructions, but then I realised I was helping my competitors. Now, I let them kill their chances.
