2022 marks the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence and it is important to mark this shared piece of Anglo-Indian history in a theatrical context.  In looking for a new perspective on the build-up to Indian independence in 1947 I came across the fascinating story of Sir Edwin Lutyens and his wife Emily during the building of the iconic monument India Gate in New Delhi. There were many surprising twists to their story and the play jumps in time between 1929 and 1947 with flashbacks to 1877 and 1919. Central to Punjabi understanding of this bid for political freedom is the Sikh assassin and martyr Udham Singh. His story also plays a pivotal role in the play. Most of the characters are factual and those that aren't are based on probability and a little theatrical license. However, the story told attempts to follow real events and there is an emotional truth behind the fictional writing.
