'Clothes Swap' Research & Development

'Clothes Swap' Research & Development

  • Project Details
Seeking talent for "Clothes Swap," a new play targeted at LGBTQ+ young people, and young people more broadly, aged 14-25. It is a comedy-drama set in an LGBTQ+ youth club under threat of closure and interference from outsiders who don’t understand why a queer safe space is important.

Featuring a cast of young queer characters, their protective but exhausted youth leader, and a suspicious, older outsider who sees the group as a threat to her group. Clothes Swap celebrates queer expression in young people and the joys and solidarity of the queer community when it is under threat. But it also celebrates the power of dialogue, shared understanding and realising there is more in common that unites us, than separates us.

Please note that although 3 characters are aged under 18, we will only be casting actors aged 18+ that can convincingly play someone under 18.

Production states "Green Carnation Theatre will be working with writer Liam Mansfield to develop his script Clothes Swap through an R&D process involving professional actors, script development and consultation with young LGBTQ+ communities. The R&D process will include table work, discussion on themes, characterisation, movement, exploration and play. We want to work with a cast that are excited by the idea of exploration and play and trying things out. We will also be working with The Proud Trust’s Rainbow Reflections group in Trafford, an LGBTQ+ youth group.

As part of the R&D process we will be sharing the play with the group for feedback and their input. The youth group will then work with an artist to create their own creative response to the play which will be presented at the sharing on Fri 12 July. The culmination of the R&D will be an invited sharing to industry guests, LGBTQ community members and young people. This will take place at Waterside Arts in Trafford on 12 July, and a further date at Shakespeare North in Knowsley (TBC)."
