  • Project Details
Casting "Prodical Monster," a feature film. Synopsis: The story begins when Joshua, a young man from south London is admitted to a psychiatric ward at the Royal Bethlem Hospital during the time he is serving a prison sentence. At the beginning of our story, whilst he is on an acute ward Joshua struggles to find mental stability and begins a path of slow recovery from psychosis (caused by a lifetime of drug/alcohol addiction and many other forms of trauma). After some months of stay, he is transferred to a rehabilitation ward and begins to work with a peer mentor named Adam, who introduces him to therapeutic services and a reformed approach towards gaining his freedom. During their time working together, Joshua experiences mindfulness meditation, begins to write for magazines and engages with a range of alternative therapies; including drama therapy, aromatherapy, and reiki, and becomes a peer trainer delivering psycho-educational courses to service users and staff in the hospital. Joshua’s past life, including his drug and alcohol misuse, family homelessness, and experiences as a young career for his brother who has autism and criminality are explored and we progressively see his journey towards well-being begin to heal him from the damage of his past. As time moves on the young man recovers and rehabilitates from both criminal behavior and psychosis, leading his mentor to suggest that he apply for a mental health tribunal to achieve discharge from his section and return to prison to avoid staying in hospital. Joshua heeds this advice and is successfully discharged of section 47/49 of the Mental Health Act and after returning to prison moves into a dangerous hostel where he experiences violence. After an altercation, he is forced to run away and goes to live with Adam, until he is ready to get his own place. As he stays with his mentor in the community a new stage of Joshua’s journey develops and Adam is able to secure him a job as an expert by experience delivering workshops to prisons and hospitals across London. Jacob saves enough money to put down a deposit for a rented accommodation but as this milestone is reached people around him begin to make him question Adam’s past. At the end of the story, he attends a book launch that is promoting his mentor’s autobiography. Adam discloses his life story at this point and explains that he was sectioned for domestic abuse that took place decades before he reformed and became a peer mentor. Joshua discovers that Adam is his father and his mother is the victim of this crime. Confronted by this turmoil, Joshua decides to abandon a course of revenge and instead seeks out a conflict mediator to build a new relationship with his long-estranged father and recent peer mentor.
