About me
I am currently working as a production technician for Merlin Entertainments at Chessington World of Adventures.
I discovered my passion for theatre and working backstage completely by accident when studying the first year of a degree at university. I had attended the beginner ballet and tap group for a term and was due to participate in the end of term dance show when I had to pull out due to a repeated knee injury. Rather than missing the show completely I offered my services backstage where I was asked to help organise the dancers, making sure everyone was at the side of the stage ready before each dance. After this opportunity I noticed the same rush of adrenaline working backstage as I did when on stage and thus decided I wanted to work towards a career in technical theatre. I left Nottingham university in April of my first year and started a number of different full-time jobs to support myself financially while trying to gain experience in different disciplines of technical theatre.
Since then I have worked on different productions as a lighting operator, designer (LD) and assistant lighting designer (ALD). In addition to assistant stage manager (ASM) and sound No2. I have also completed a ten-day technical theatre course with the National Youth Theatre, a two-day training course with ETC and an Introduction to Stage Pyrotechnics course with JustFX.
Working in theatre allows me to spend time learning new skills. It challenges me to pick these up quickly and I enjoy working on live performances where anything could happen. I have had to learn to trust my own abilities and work well under pressure. I appreciate being able to add to the audience's enjoyment of each performance and find the work most rewarding by knowing I have contributed to the success of a production. My main interest within technical theatre is lighting design and operation as this is the area I have had most experience within.
