About me
Zachary Holton
2015 has Zac celebrating 30 years working in professional theatre. Starting at the tender age of 15 by securing for himself the sponsorship from a local firm, this enabled him to work as an acting ASM for the Nottingham Playhouse. It was here he made his acting debut in the world stage premier of Room at the Top (1985) also appearing in Mother Goose (1985) and A Majority of One (1986). Following this he understudied the role of Gozark in the London Palladium production of Singin’ in the Rain with Tommy Steele at the Bristol and Birmingham Hippodromes, touring as far as the Shinjuku Koma Stadium in Tokyo.
On returning to the Nottingham Playhouse at the grand old age of 17, he continued his theatre education landing several acting roles including: Boo Radley in To Kill a Mocking Bird (1987) and Chad Gubbins in Lark Rise (1988) as well as playing various roles in The Hobbit, including Gandalf and Smaug the Dragon for the Nottingham Playhouse and two national tours (1989). Other credits for his early work in theatre at this time include: Scripting and Directing two end of season reviews and also writing and presenting the Family Fun Day Technical presentation (1991). Technical Stage Manager with the Roundabout TIE Company, touring Nottinghamshire schools with projects such as Frankie’s Friends, Commonlore Storytellers and The Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre of Australia; Sponsorship Co-ordinator and Assistant Director to Kenneth Alan Taylor for Jack and the Beanstalk (1993). The next two decades saw his continuation within the industry.
Film, radio and television credits include: Acting; on-screen presenter in Somewhere beginning with N… (Nottingham’s Tourist Information Film); A very Peculiar Practice (BBC); The Bill (Thames); Hard Cases and The Next Step (Central Television). Directing; Under Milk Wood for the Northern College Video Project (Works Outing Theatre Company). Writing and broadcasting for Nottinghamshire radio stations and various voiceover work (Mentorn Films), (Chrysalis TV).
Directing credits include: Assistant Director to Alan Cohen on Eight Opera’s performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank London (National Opera Studio). Assistant Director at the Crucible Theatre Sheffield to: Michael Rudman on Hamlet and Mansfield Park; Tim Luscombe on Oliver and to Alan Cohen on Peter Pan, the combination of which resulted in Zac being shortlisted for a position as a Staff Director for the National Theatre. Director: Merlin’s Missing Magic (South Yorkshire Community Touring Pantomime) and Poetry for the Sheffield Literary Festival.
Other credits include: Stage Management and Lighting Designer on various touring shows (Works Outing Theatre Company); Artistic Director and writer for Viva Mania (Viva Youth Theatre); Drama teacher (The River Leen School) and Head of Drama where he directed, for internal and external performances, productions such as Hairspray, A Slice of Saturday Night, The Positive Hour and Pravda (Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama).
The past five years has seen Zac continue his eclectic career by touring the UK & Ireland as Tour Manager with Strauss Gala and Over the Rainbow; the Eva Cassidy story with Faye Tozer (Theatre Productions); touring the United Kingdom and Ireland with The Importance of Being Oscar (Original Theatre Company). Playing the dastardly Captain Hook in Peter Pan (Little Theatre Sherringham); As Director for Jane Austen’s Emma (Heartbreak Productions); Company Stage Manager for Cinderella (Palace Theatre Newark), Snow White & Jack and the Beanstalk (Marina Theatre Lowestoft) and Stage Manager for Othello and the highly acclaimed Journey’s End, in which he also played the role of the Company Sergeant Major(Icarus Theatre Collective / Original Theatre Company). This year he was shortlisted for the Stage Management Associations Individual Award in recognition of his work on Journeys End . As Lord Thurlow in The Madness of King George III for its 2010 autumn tour opposite the late Mr Simon Ward. 2011/12 has seen him touring the UK with Dancing at Lughnasa as Company Stage Manager and understudy for Daragh O'Mally, Macbeth playing Duncan at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and UK & Ireland tour & Opening the 2012 German Shakespeare Festival at the Globe (Neuss) also with Icarus Theatre Collective touring 2012/13 as Lord Capulet in Romeo & Juliet. Outside of the theatre, Zac has a keen interest in gardening and still resides in Nottinghamshire with his wife Tracey and their three sons Sam, Nikolas & Tyler.
