There is still the unanswered question here:

".....educate us as to how these so called "good robots (those indexing useful data)" serve me and my fellow members?"

Are we avoiding answering this one?

Well, I´ll post the question more clearly:

Please inform me just how a "good robots (those indexing useful data)" benefits me?

Best.

Editorial Comment The purpose of CCP is to help promote you as an actor.

Robots acting for bing.com google.com yahoo.com (and hundreds of other search engines) help ensure your profile can be found in these search engines.

We consider that a form of promotion and therefore beneficial to our members. But if you don't, you can always turn this off by using the settings here.

It won't stop the robots from viewing your page (they need to do this to find out if they are allowed to index/store the results) but turning this setting off, will eventually remove your details from these search engines.

Doesn't bother me as I run Linux on my main computer. If you are using Micro$oft run a spybot protector such as http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/.

The reason that I don't understand the problem is that no one has said precisely what they object to. What is wrong with being viewed whether by a real person or a bot? I do not have anything on my site that is so confidential that it would impinge on any other area of my life or allow anyone to get at my accounts. I am happy to be enlightened.

I´m not getting this at all.

How does having my CCP profile visible to google searches benefit me as an actor?

Maybe I´ve got it all wrong, but if someone in the profession wants to hire or contact me they go to Spotlight and perhaps CCP and in absolute emergencies they can make contact through Equity, as I beleive Equity will pass on any message if this is the only way of contacting an actor; as long as their subs are up to date of course.

This isn´t X-Factor; I am not all that fussed that my details are viewible on google, yahoo, etc. If it´s this avenue that someone takes to view my details etc, it´s more than likely not an industry professional making the enquirey, and thus they probably won´t be looking to hire me as an actor.

I am not looking for promotion for promotions sake.

Best.

Editorial Comment Sounds like you should turn this feature off then.

Please click this link and update your settings.

Most people like this feature because not all casting directors, or employers have heard of those services. In fact many may just remember your name or a role you played. In these circumstances they can simply search using google/bing and find your details - it's a great way to ensure you can be found... but again, if you prefer not to have this service, simply update your settings as detailed above.

@Editorial comment

".....not all casting directors, or employers have heard of those services."

Meaning Spotlight!?!

ROFL!

So, to be clear, CCP´s argument for allowing "good" and "bad" ´bots to hit on our profiles, is that it helps to promote the fact that we are well promoted.

Eh!?!

FYI

I actioned therse options from the outset:

always hide tel
always hide mobile
hide from google
Never allow site to ask for additional info
Never share with facebook
Hide Facebook ´Like´ Button
no weekly newsletter

Best.

This topic seems to be going around in circles.

Two points.

1. Your CCP profile is can be listed in google.
When someone searches for you, a detailed, professional CV with your full information, photos and showreel comes up. Usually on the first page, this of course depends how common your name is/how well you are marketed on the internet.
Spotlight don't do this, so I don't understand how this is anything but a good thing? (If you want to be an actor, in this day and age you are going to be on the internet whether you like it or not)

2. If an unrecognised I.P comes up, who is to say it is a bot and not a user or casting director who is not logged into the system? Or someone using a laptop in a foreign country. Or maybe I'm naive and these bots are about to knock on my door?!

The internet is an excellent marketing tool, but unfortunately you cannot control who looks at it.

That's why photos of your pants or your 20 year old self doing tequila shots should be left on private profiles ;)
(Last sentence was a joke to lighten the mood and I hope doesn't cause offence)

Thank the Lord the internet hadn't been invented when I was in my 20's doing tequila and peach schnapps lineups!! Not a pretty sight I can tell you!! Was great fun though from what I can remember! :-o

I agree with Catherine on this one. At the end of the day as soon as one puts oneself on line....you and your details are open to
a) the world and
b) to all the trawlers, robots....and all sorts of other info hunting spy devils.

However, your car number-plate is read probably 10 - 20 times a day and info passed on to an on line source for botty harvesting!!!

At the end of the day: as long as you use the net carefully....there will be no issues. Watch out for dodgy emails...notes from your bank and the like....I always delete delete delete!!
It's worth noting any on line fraud with your bank, means the bank is liable...not you.

As for facebook....and the like...keep everything private. I never FB anything private...not even via messages. Same with CCP pm's...I would rather email using my outlook emails, or call and chat to someone regarding sensitive or private....not that I have much sensitive or private info!! Same for hotmail accounts....I'd def not pass on too much on there!

I understand the worries....but we are actors and want the world to know about us!! Not easy to be "selectively" private I fear!

@Emma White

I know what you mean; just imagine it:

Surveillance cameras in the streets.

Private phone calls logged and recorded.

Emails automatically read.

A semi-private police security unit infiltrating political groups.

The Media running fictional stories of WMD´s as factual.

Yeah, sure am glad none of that´s happening.

Well I wouldn't worry about it Stuart, it's not just us.

I understand they have cameras on Mars now.

It wouldn't surprise me if they capture an ambitious Martian actor doing a monologue.

i really don't see what the issue is here.

If you use a computer and you have a profile on an internet based site this will happen.

How does this affect you in any way?

If you really want to worry yourself type your name into a site like 123 People and you will see how much information about you is already out there.

CCP keep all your private/ contact details safe, so why is this a problem?

Yeah, I really don't see the issue, aside from a viewpoint of wanting to avoid clutter on the "viewed by" page. This could be negated by a filter that hides bots' IPs, which is something other sites seem to be able to do. Wordpress, for example, separates bot hits from likely human hits on my website's stats page. I don't know HOW, but it does.

On the other hand, what is REALLY the use of the "viewed by" thing? I mean, it's nice to know that someone has been to my profile, but if it's an employer, I wouldn't contact them to say "Hey you! You looked at my profile! Wanna hire me?!" as that would be incredibly pushy and I wouldn't appreciate it being done to myself. I realise I'm probably missing something here, so if someone could help me figure out what the good of that page REALLY is (aside from knowing that someone looked at me and didn't contact me after...) I'd be much obliged. :)

@Rebecca Probyn

I took your suggestion and "123 poeple´d" my name, absolutely nothing to concern me, as there is nothing there; nada! Except a showreel that the editor has on his youtube channel, which I´m fine with as I would doubt a ´bot could extract any information from that.

@Magnus Sinding

I checked your website by the way, very slick!

In answer to your "viewed by" query; I find it useful to see that an employer has viewed my profile, after I have responded to a casting call they have previously posted on CCP. A couple of views by the same employer on consectutive is enough to keep me happy for a week; do they call me in for an audtion? Well that´s a different matter.

Best.
