About me
I have always wanted to act, and was excited to take drama for GCSE at secondary school. Full transparency, in the end I achieved an E grade, because I didn't hand in a single piece of coursework. It was only the merit of my practical performances that stopped me getting a failing grade. I won't blame my teachers, but I could... In fact, actually I will blame them.Since then I have become an electrician and went on to teach for seven years, and regret my disinterest in school.
Long story short, I didn't return to my dreams of acting until last year, when I joined the Alexandra Players, and debuted as Edmund Swettenham, in Agatha Christie's 'A Murder is Announced'.
Since then I have been in every production. Taking a prominent role in 'Oh, What a Lovely War', surprising even myself, with my ability on the musical numbers, landing three solos and leading all the soldiers' songs.
The last play was Alan Ayckbourn's 'Drowning on Dry Land', in which I played Jason, the agent/manager of the hapless lead; Charlie Conrad. Battling to keep everything together as it falls apart at the seams.
In the last two weeks I have been cast in the lead role of Christopher Isherwood, in 'I Am a Camera', inspired by his Berlin Stories.
Last Wednesday I shocked everyone at rehearsals with my seemingly jarring and OTT imaging of CI. Until I showed them all footage of the actual CI that I had found online, on the advice of the director. They all agreed that I should pursue that line of carefully researched, true-to-life revival of his unique voice and mannerisms.
I am yet to perform in my own Yorkshire accent, and find great joy in the process of finding a voice for any character I play. I'm quite good at doing many different accents and creating personas.
I've recently changed jobs from teaching, to working for myself as an electrician. This allows me to take half days for auditions, and be flexible with regards to rehearsals.
I hope you read this far, or at least past my opening gambit of E grade confessions.
Additional skills:
I am skilled in accent work, improvisation, writing and performing poetry;traditional and spoken word.
I can project my voice to suit any venue, and my insecurities push me to earnestly seek advice from peers and accept criticism with an open mind.
Additional information:
I used to be a boxer, so I have experience of spacial awareness, allowing me to keep my movements looking natural even in improv situations. This has been useful when other cast members are clumsy, uncoordinated, or lacking stage awareness.
