About me
I am a recent graduate of Rose Bruford College, I studied American theatre arts which gave me look into American playwrights, practitioners, politics and a completely different culture; which I was able to experience first hand whilst living in Philadelphia studying at the University of the Arts as an acting major. In the UK I studied classes such as politics, history, voice, speech, movement, independent research projects and intense workshops studying different practitioners. I am also a qualified trampoline coach and have volunteered for a youth club for young people with learning disabilities, where I help with activities such as trampoline, arts & crafts, cheerleading, dance and drama.
Whilst in Philadelphia I studied playwriting, directing, acting for camera, musical theatre history, musical theatre performance, basic piano, voice and speech and ballet. I found the most beneficial part of my experience was having the opportunity to be completely submerged in a different culture and being able to meet people with such diverse views to my own.
I have been taught to be inquisitive and to question authority, question everything and not believe everything you hear; that I should go out and do my own research and have my own opinions that are uniquely mine. After graduating I cannot help but wonder why I am left feeling underwhelmed at the representation of me! however small my demographic may be (a black lesbian who also has an invisible disability). Why has my race and sexuality not been represented as equally as the heteronormative? I am now motivated to write more plays for the underrepresented. It has also motivated me to write a play with a large female cast who are strong willed women and have something to say.
This course has made me realise how fed up I am with the patriarchy of the art world and the world in general - It reminds me that as a society we have a long way to go and I want to be apart of the solution
Additional skills:
I am a UKCC level 2 British Gymnastics Trampoline Coach and have been a qualified coach since 2007. I have been a gymnast since the age of 6 but found my passion for teaching trampoline around the age of 13 as an assistant to my mother who is also a coach and manager of Greenwich Bouncers Trampoline Academy which we set up together in 2008.
