About me
When I wrote my personal statement, entering my undergraduate degree, I wrote a large paragraph on Dame Judi Dench. Dench continues to inspire me but I will not repeat my adulations here. Instead I will use her advice, to try to sell myself amidst countless others as “You know that right behind you, stretching back as far as you can see, are other people wanting to play the same part and probably better than you”.As clichéd as it sounds, I have wanted to become an actor since playing Lily in my primary school production of Annie, but I will not waste space on it or the many other amateur productions I have been involved in, beyond saying that I played an active role in my local youth theatre group in my small hometown of Ayr, Scotland, for a number of years, both in my own classes and productions, and in helping teach younger children. I believe that this not only improved my skills as an actor, but also my patience and understanding working with others.
My time at Glasgow University studying Theatre Studies has served me in good stead, providing me with a firm basis in the theory of the performing arts, from Commedia Dell’arte to Forced Entertainment. I also had the opportunity to take part in other areas, including courses in Writing for Performance, taught by prolific and successful playwrights. I thoroughly enjoyed the university course, however I know that practical performance is where my passion truly lies.
I also studied English Literature at university, and the worlds of theatre and literature are so interlinked that I believe this could only have been beneficial for me. My experience in literature and TS has left me with a firm understanding of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson and more contemporary playwrights, in addition to improving myself as a writer and linguist.
Whilst studying at university, I was involved in a number of productions with Encore student theatre group- including several plays by Beckett and students’ original scripts, and performed as the Princess of France in Love’s Labour’s Lost with the Shakespeare Society. I am lucky enough to have received a scholarship towards a weekly Acting class at RCS, which I am finding invaluable. I have also worked as an extra and have been involved in a number of stand-alone films and plays (either for Directing programs or other pursuits) at by students at Glasgow University, Strathclyde and SAE. All of this has improved my ability to take direction and criticism, and since leaving university I have secured experience in several plays, short films, staged readings and soundscapes.
As a person, I know who I am and what I want. I have combined my childhood dream with a love of academia by throwing my energy into obtaining an admirable university degree, and gaining life experience. Drama is the most powerful force in my life. My part time work throughout university and school, both in Scotland and abroad, as well as being necessary to fund my ambitions, shows me to be a dependable, hard-working team player, and I appreciate having held these positions, but my heart is, and always has been in performance.
