About me
After I graduated from the University of Oxford I wanted to train professionally as an actor, but after meeting Luke Rollason I decided to join him in studying at École Philippe Gaulier. I graduated in 2019 after finishing the 10-week clown module, and have been working as an actor and clown since returning to the UK. The training I have received at Philippe's school inspires all the work that I have made subsequently - from comedy to tragedy - and I am finding that my real strengths and individuality are best on show in character comedy. My work as a clown picked up the Otherplace Award in Brighton (2019) , and I was runner-up in two major London comedy competitions in the same year. In 2020 I reached the finals of both competitions again. In 2021 I co-founded The Flop with Dan Lees and Cammy Sinclair and we had a sell-out run at that year's reduced Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2022 we performed the show again at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and received multiple 5 star review and were awarded the Malcolm Hardee Award for Comic Originality at the end of our sell-out run. Claire Smith writing for Beyond the Joke called the show 'a miracle... uproariously funny', and Kate Copstick (Scotsman) wrote 'No matter how bad a day you have had, The Flop will make your heart sing.'I am currently an Associate Lecturer in Acting on the BA at St. Mary's University Twickenham, and the Clowning Tutor on the MA Acting at Arts Ed.
I teach LAMDA acting lessons at Wetherby Senior school and also tutor privately in subjects ranging from English Literature to Film composition.
Ethos:
As performers it is impossible to hide. It is our job to share our humanity with all its beauty, all its stupidity. First, I teach how to find what makes us beautiful on the stage, and then to notice and enjoy how ridiculous we are. We are looking for the ways that people find us funny. For young actors it can be a wonderful process to swim in these vulnerable places, making friends with accidents and stupidity.
As a teacher I always try to create a playing space that is full of warmth and joy, guiding people to see reality with humour even when they have done something ‘bad’. For me teaching clown is all about our relationship with failure, and self-discovery within this.
Drawing from my time with Philippe and Carlo in Paris, I am aim to pass on to students a deep appreciation for the beauty and humanity in failure. Doing before thinking, risking it all for the fun of it, listening to our musicality while connected in body, in breath, and with the audience.
Additional skills:
Violin, Viola, Double Bass, Piano, Vocals, physical theatre, puppetry, devising, slapstick.
