Training & Development
Photography has been an integral part of my job as a wildlife biologist for over 25years. As a filmmaker, I’m largely self-taught on-the-job, and have actively sought and obtained extensive experience in solo self-shooting documentary material and in camera work with a crew. Formal courses:
• A2 Certificate of Competence Allowing legal piloting of drones up to 2kg (or C2 class).
• Inside the Edit An online training course involving about 50 hours of video-based taught materialandextensiveeditingexperienceusingtherawvideomaterialprovided. Thecourseis mainly aimed at documentary editors, and concerns the journalistic and editorial process of editing rather than the software used. I learned a lot! Understanding how to edit documentary informs how you shoot it, and vice versa.
• Screen Yorkshire Bootcamp A week’s course covering all main roles in film production, run by Screen Yorkshire. Besides presentations from a variety of film professionals, the course provided a chance to network with them and other industry folk.
• DV Talent, Step up to Shooting AP Six days of hands-on training and experience with an industry-leading documentary shooter, producer and editor, with an emphasis on capturing challenging actuality and shooting for the edit, as well as more traditional interview and documentary work.
• Chartered Biologist (CBiol) Royal Society of Biology
• PhD, terrestrial wildlife ecotoxicology, University of Reading, 2003
• BSc( T ech), applied biology, University of Wales, Cardiff, 1991
Other abilities
• Full, clean UK B+E driving license, car owner, experienced 4WD off-road driver.
• Familiar with Mac and Windows software; touch-typist.
• Experienced at managing and running field teams in remote areas for over 20 years, including
logistical planning.
