About me
After receiving an unconditional offer from Middlesex University I made the decision to defer a year in order to gain as much first-hand experience in the film industry as possible. I have always been driven by my ambition to get into the film industry. I was certain that the best route to take would be to study media-related subjects at both GCSE and A-Level. This has helped develop both my practical and theoretical skills and has given me the time to reflect that this is what I want to focus on as my future. The variety of blockbuster, independent and foreign films that I have watched over the years not only inspire me on a technical and emotional level but I believe film as a medium is important in how it allows us to discuss certain issues and presents certain themes that are current in society today. Whilst at St Ivo, I have acted as a Film and Media ambassador during the schools open days, talking to parents and prospective pupils. Moreover, helping film the local dance production 'Ivolution' gave me a more practical understanding of the need to be organised from a hands on perspective. I also acquired important values such as delegation and collaboration, sometimes thinking differently in order to overcome problems and the importance of taking on board other people's views. This was then further improved from the experience and feedback I gained from having my own short film entered into the Cambridge Young Peoples Film Festival. In addition, through editing the footage and other school-based projects I have learnt important lessons in being evaluative of my work and furthering the development of my film skills. I also completed a work placement experience at Somersault Production studios which gave me a basic understanding on the commercial aspects and how important team-work is to ensure that the best possible product is created. For instance, when acting as runner on set of a business commercial for their website I learnt how important every small detail is, from framing a shot to the high-key lighting and how you must utilise every second when working in order to keep to the tight deadlines. I also won the Mark Jones Award in recognition of dedication and commitment to the study of Film and Media, as well as the achievement of excellence in both the academic and practical sides of both subjects. Knowing that this is one of the toughest careers to pursue, I intend to devote whatever time is necessary with the hope of one day being able to say I played a part in crafting a film.Skills
