About me
My name is Simon Richert and I’m just about to graduate the production sound course at the NFTS, and I’m very passionate about sound.I’m looking for freelance work as a Sound Recordist.
I enjoy working as part of a sound team and am good at thinking calmly and logically in high-pressured situations.
I’ve learned so much while at the NFTS, about gear, techniques and working with people.
I was constantly getting challenged to get better.
There’s never been another job where I can come home exhausted, but wake up refreshed and excited for another day at work. It’s a real passion and I feel very lucky to be able to work at something that I love doing.
I think that all of the productions we did at school tested us in different ways, and it could have been very stressful. But thanks to my experience working in restaurants, I was able to manage that stress.
My time on the course brought me to many different places and situations. I was shooting a fiction project in Wales, and each location was worse than the last. A noisy factory, a pub with a boxing club upstairs, an alley with roadworks, dogs and screaming children. Inside a pigeon loft during an air show. But I think shoots like that definitely help you develop.
For a sound assistant (and the other roles as well) I know that getting good sound means being able to work well with other people and thinking ahead, as well as obviously getting the boom and radios in the right place, at the right time. They’re all important pieces of the puzzle.
I think it’s important to keep a friendly, but focused attitude. It means that I can take in what’s going on around me, while keeping a clear view of what needs to be done.
I do really enjoy booming and radio micing. It’s a true skill, and there is always more to learn, but getting a shot right under time pressure and difficult lighting, is a fantastic feeling.
The planning, the creative solutions, liaising with other departments, all to get the best possible sound.
If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
