About me
I have recently completed my degree in BSc Television Production Technology at Staffordshire University. Over the course of my studies I have gained a variety of experience as a camera operator, alongside working within the industry. I have worked for several independent TV producers and other filmmakers, producing creative and engaging content across different genres. I am proficient on a range of cameras and sound equipment, frequently travelling on my own throughout Europe to produce films. An example of my work is collaboration with the University’s Archaeology department; self-directing and shooting content for their social media and online platforms. During several research trips I was tasked with self-directing a documentary on their work. As part of this project I received an itinerary for each trip, which I then used to storyboard and plan the content, and how best to film it. Whilst on location I filmed the ongoing work, using my creative ideas to create engaging ways of recording events. A large part of this included interviewing the participants and recording vox-pops, to tie together the story in the final edit. During these interviews I gained extensive experience in managing questions, but also ensuring the camera and sound were of a high quality. In this and all projects I always build strong relationships with the people I’m working with, which ensures I record the best answers and shoot engaging content. As I worked alone on these projects, time management and planning was always important. A lot of the work was also during unsociable hours and on long days; however I welcomed the opportunity and really engaged with the project. I have a passion for storytelling, and felt this collaboration was a great experience. The producers and archaeologists always choose to take me with them on these trips due to my experience, and engagement in producing the content they require. Next week I am travelling to Norway with them to continue this project, demonstrating their trust in my performance and commitment to our ongoing partnership.
I have also filmed several of my own documentaries. In 2017 I wrote, directed and shot a documentary on the history of the Spitfire in Stoke-On-Trent. This involved extensive research which I undertook to gain archive, and better build the story. I contacted various contributors, and again built relationships and agreed permissions to secure interviews and filming rights. This included negotiating exclusive access with the company who originally built the aircraft, resulting in us being the first film crew to record their work. I later gained extensive praise for this from lecturers and producers. This film was subsequently submitted for a Royal Television Society (RTS) award, and is currently under consideration at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) Film Festival.
The film received several public showings and was very well received, and was also featured in local newspapers. I have recently produced a new Cold War documentary, which is going to again be submitted for RTS awards and potential future TV broadcast.
In October 2017 I also was involved in another documentary, ‘War Above the Trenches’ which was recently broadcast on the Yesterday UKTV channel. On this programme I worked with a BAFTA nominated director who personally selected me based on my track record, to direct and shoot a Behind the Scenes documentary on the programme. He was impressed with my work, and employed me as a Camera Operator for several scenes on the main production. The documentary I produced on this programme went on to be featured on the DVD release, where I am credited as the director and camera operator.
I have a track record of producing strong films. I work under pressure and apply my comprehensive knowledge of both equipment and how these films are watched, for example online. I have also completed a variety of work for various clients at conferences and meetings, live-streaming online and filming the events at various locations and times outside normal working hours to suit the client’s needs. I always meet with the client beforehand and plan around this, before undertaking any work. I have live-streamed for several events to both venues for guests on a projected screen, and to an online platform, both in multi-camera and single camera setups.
