About me
Since graduation from university I have worked predominantly as a freelance Technical Stage Manager, extensively for Fevered Sleep and for Fuel Theatre. The experiences I have gained, and had, whilst working in this environment have been invaluable to me and have shaped my career and indeed learning. Working in, sometimes, small technical departments requires me to be able to fill many roles, one of my strongest assets. From writing a prompt copy, writing cue sheets running and booking rehearsal spaces to making and sourcing props my career path has enabled me to have experience in all areas of stage management.Whilst predominantly working freelance I have spent some time working in house (Polka Children's Theatre, The Young Vic) or for an institution (Royal Holloway University, Middlesex University). All of the venues aforementioned receive visiting companies to their varied studio spaces or theatres. Having toured extensively I feel I'm in a great position, allowing me to know what a touring company requires to make their experience of visiting a different venue a positive and successful one.
In my experience there is no better feeling having to spent a day driving to a new venue than to be welcomed by a member of staff who is willing to introduce themselves and make arriving to a new venue pleasurable and memorable.
In the past I have liaised with visiting companies in a stage management or in a lighting department capacity. Again my knowledge of different stage management and technical disciplines gives me a great insight into what companies want from a tour venue.
Dealing with other team members and external companies is one of my greatest strengths. I believe I am an approachable member of any team and can work well as an individual or a part of a team, one of the reasons I am drawn to stage management is the opportunity it allows me to work with new people as well as a regular group of people.
In a position of authority, such as the one advertised, it would be important to be able to distinguish myself as a team leader and to use my leadership and management skills to deal with situations which may arise such as disciplinary or personal problems which I feel I would be equally adept at addressing with my calm, decisive and approachable manner.
I also have a track record of leading teams, organising local crews and delegating jobs on get ins/outs or scheduling a production/technical sessions.
When working or heading up a team, it is essential to constantly be evaluating other colleagues. Appraisals offer line managers an opportunity to not only guide their teams to making positive changes as individuals but they allows team members to inform line managers of any issues or suggestions to improve the working environment. In the past I have used appraisals from my line managers to request more responsibility and for training in areas I have felt the department could benefit from.
The productions I work on have large creative and technical teams. Working with so many people can prove difficult. It is necessary to communicate regularly so the main project objectives are at the forefront. Whether it be via email, face to face discussions or through formal production meetings communication between departments is essential.
At Royal Holloway I needed effective communication skills to work with students who, in some cases, had no knowledge of any theatrical production practices. I was responsible for the health and safety of groups of students and visitors to the department during performances and class time.
I am used to adhering to union regulations. For example, when working on the recent tour of Going Dark I was responsible for ensuing all works were completed to schedule. An important part of this scheduling was factoring in regular and reasonable breaks for all crew and company members, according to union regs.
With the increased amount of technology used within performances it's common for projectors to break down or other effects to stop working. It's at times like this which also require me to be a clear thinking individual who is able to prioritise jobs and delegate team members to safely and effectively complete tasks and maintain high production standards. An understanding of all production elements is essential to being a successful Company Stage Manager.
I have often been required to source props for shows, both for rehearsals and during runs, once over 300 for Fevered Sleeps On Ageing. I've also headed up teams to source props. When working for Polka, for example, I was given the task of managing the props budget and three ASMs to research and gather all the props for a range of performances at the venue.
Working to a budget is essential in any industry. Outside of budgeting props I have also had experience of working to a budget when planning the tour for Polka Theatre of Sticks and Stones. It was my job as production assistant to search for accommodation and transport for the three cast members and the two person technical team whilst on the road with the show.
Working in an industry which is ever changing I am determined to keep up to date with trends. Learning from others has been a valuable means to enhance my learning throughout my career. However, I have also taken it upon myself to teach myself software such as Vectorworks, Qlab and Garage Band. I have also made efforts to take part in more formal training in Auto Cad. Aside from production specific software I have also become very familiar with Microsoft Office especially Excel, a useful tool for any stage manager!
