About me
My name is Thomas Martinez and I am a graduate from the University of Sussex (BA in Drama Studies and English). I am passionate about Theatre and am interested in working in the industry. I currently work as an MC with Sofar Sounds London, working with musicians, poets, spoken word artists and other performers to engage audiences in their work. I have not been extensively involved in the Theatre industry in a few years but am looking to get involved as a stage manager, producer, director and performer. At the age of 13 I was selected to sing as a soloist in a professional production of Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' at the Geneva Opera House. This experience instilled in me a passion for working in the theatre, a space of strange Otherness where bodies, objects, light, sound and audiences on and off stage commingle to create limitless redefining possibilities. From then on I acted in performances every year, and directed and produced my own productions. I was able to take a theatre option for the French baccalaureate for which my mark was 20/20. I was Stage Manager in the final Drama project of my BA, Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters’. In this position I affirmed myself as a collaborator and mediator. This role entailed creating and maintaining a master-script (including all blocking and sound/lighting cues) for a production of ‘Three Sisters’ by Anton Chekhov. I was also in charge of the overall running of the stage during the rehearsal period and on show-days (coordinating communication between the production members and organising the backstage areas). The overall performance was graded 75% and my role as Stage Manager was graded 85%. I was the highest-ranking drama student of the removed class.
As part of my course, I wrote, directed, produced and devised several performance projects. One of the most interesting for me was the creation of a Verbatim piece of performance for a module that looked at ethical issues arising from the making of theatre (often dealing with real events or real people’s experiences). For the project, we interviewed and told the stories of homeless women in Brighton, keeping the original words and sentences but editing and juxtaposing different elements to focus them into a performance. The aim was to deal with the raw material in a respectful and truthful way, that tried to accurately relay the experiences, whilst taking into account how our perspectives had inevitably shaped the material. Theatre that deals with present-day issues fascinates me.
I was also on the committee of my university’s drama society. As Vice-President/Play-Coordinator, I attended weekly rehearsals and worked with directors, producers and actors, overseeing their processes (creative and administrative), and making sure that the shows they produced were a success. The experience helped me to gain confidence in proposing ideas and engaging with different personalities and working techniques. As Welfare and Inclusivity Officer, my aim was to make sure the society functioned in a spirit of open mindedness and respect, and to help resolve occasional conflicts. For me, the theatre is a space of empathy and one that can open up possibilities of understanding others and difference. As well as acting in plays through the Drama Society, I co-directed and produced 'The Blind' by Maurice Maeterlinck. I translated the original text from French into a new, contemporary version and decided to stage it as an outdoor, immersive performance. The play itself is about 6 blind characters trying to get to grips with an unseen environment, and so I decided to blindfold the audience as well as the actors, creating an atmosphere through all of the senses except that of sight. I re-adapted the performance for an indoor venue as part of the Off the Cuff Festival in Brighton.
I worked at the Marlborough Pub and Theatre in Brighton during the Fringe Festival (2015). I worked as an assistant at the Marlborough Pub and Theatre throughout the Brighton Fringe Theatre festival (2015). I worked as an assistant to the two directors of the theatre and the Stage Manager: helping with props, costume sourcing, assisting artists with their shows’ set up and publicity. I was in charge of administrative duties, budgeting and running box-office. I occasionally worked at the venue throughout my last academic year in Brighton. I was in closing show for the 2014 and 2015 Brighton Theatre Festival.
I am available to work in a full time position and flexible in regards to location. I am a British citizen, and I have the correct permits to work in Britain.
Additional skills:
Computer literate
Engaging, expressive
Excellent editing and filming skills
Organised and dynamic
Practical and good at manual tasks
Trilingual (English, French, Spanish)
Very good at analysis and writing but also able to think on my feet
Prior to starting my BA in English Literature and Drama I studied the first year of a Media Practice course at the University of Sussex. I gained skills in web design, photography, sound design and video editing (Adobe Premiere).
I also have a French certificate that authorises the holder to work with children on summer camps and in after-school activity centres (BAFA: Brevet d'Aptitude aux Fonctions d'Animateur). I was a leader at 4 summer camps, and gained experience in working with children and teenagers. I was specifically in charge of the overall theme of the camp and of all the games and activities. This entailed developing and sustaining consistent storylines and characters and ensuring that each activity had educational value.

I have taken part in several voluntary projects for which I have fundraised. With a scout organisation I worked in a school in Morocco (decorating and teaching French) and on an organic farm.
