    Additional Skills

    Having worked in theatre also as a technician, stage manager and technical stage manager since 2015, I am able to confidently rig, programme and operate lights and sound for small to medium sized venues. I am also a competent sound engineer, having mixed bands, dj nights, electronic art music and non-music events.

    About me

    I am a sound artist working principally in multidisciplinary, exploratory forms of performance. I design and compose sound for theatre in a non-conventional way: being embedded within the creative journey, putting as much thought into rehearsal sound as performance sound, incorporating in the design all sonic aspects of a performance, incorporation of live sound (e.g. foley), in addition to the standard practice of programming and operating equipment and cues.

    I first started composing for theatre in 2012, designing the majority of my university drama society's plays (I fell into it by accident; best accident of my life). Since graduating in 2014 I've worked as a technician and stage manager in the London fringe scene while doing my masters (Sonic Arts: Goldsmiths, London), allowing me to see far more theatre than I could ever have afforded to see, and which gave me invaluable insight into how sound is, can and should be treated on stage.

    My work of late has used a programming environment (Max/MSP) to drive an interactive, reactive, self-generating sound design past what conventional show control software is capable of:

    ~ using vocal microphones to sample themselves depending on what's being said;

    ~ attaching performers to motion capture devices to trigger sounds through gesture and speed;

    ~ affixing contact microphones to the set, and using them to regurgitate and manipulate previous sounds;

    ~ using butt-kickers to make the stage vibrate at various inputs;

    ~ setting up all these processes to be triggered in a qlab-like way by an operator to ensure versatility of design when touring.

    I am hopeful to hear from people who are interested in more expanded forms of sound design, in collaborative creation, and in the potential of sound on stage in general.

    NB: My working life has, up until recently, been fringe-based. I understand the constraints of low-budget shows in terms of equipment, availability, and money. I adapt to each particular set of circumstances - meaning I am experienced in and happy to create qlab-triggerable cues, work with "substandard" audio equipment, work by remote etc.. One of my major gripes with other sound designers is the pursuit of perfection, which isn't of interest to me.
