Professional Experience
A professional practitioner in all media and a motivated teacher, I have a body of performance work as leading and character actor (England & Canada) in over 400 plays, films, TV & radio productions, and countless commercials. I was artistic director for two companies, and a teacher at HE level at three universities.
In England I was a company member of the Liverpool Everyman and the Leicester Theatre Company, where I worked with Michael Bogdanov, Mia Farrow, Alan Rickman, Heather Sears, Tim Rice and Henry Livings, among many others.
In Vancouver, I performed regularly at the Arts Club, the Playhouse and City Stage theatres and was a regular on CBC Radio (including The Cherry Orchard, as Lophakin opposite Dame Peggy Ashcroft's Madame Ranevskaya).
H.E. Experience
At Memorial University I taught performance for the camera.
At Regina University I taught performance, directed The Caucasian Chalk Circle and acted with senior students in Gammer Gurten's Needle, The Trojan Women and Ken Mitchell’s The Shipbuilder.
Victoria University hired me to introduce classical theatre into the B.A. Program at Matsqui Federal Penitentiary after directing Loot at the prison (documented in the film Inside/Out).
I performed with students at UBC in Brecht on Brecht and The Firebugs.
In Toronto I was a play therapist at the Children's Hours Clinic for the treatment of emotionally disturbed children.
I taught acting for the camera at Charles Stuart International Agency, Vancouver, and Focus International Agency, Montreal.
Artistic Direction
In Vancouver, after playing a lead in Deserters, a film by Jack Darcus, I directed Twelfth Night at the Firehall Theatre. A critical and box office success, the production led the way to the foundation of the Vancouver Shakespeare Festival, which developed into Bard On The Beach as it is called today.
Following the success of Twefth Night I founded the Open Theatre Company, a community-based classical theatre company. I incorporated an open door policy whereby anyone in the community without prior experience wanting to participate in a play could do so. I produced nine plays: by Chekhov (2), Shakespeare (3), Brecht, Vanbrugh, Frisch and Coward.
Uncle Vanya - our most successful production staged in a warehouse on a 4000 sq. ft. set during Expo '86 - inspired the movie Vanya on 42nd Street.
I was also artistic director for White Rock Summer Theatre.
Acting for Screen & Television
Since 1993, in Montreal, as NOEL BURTON, I have acted in film, TV, theatre, radio, video games and commercials in English, French and Spanish, working with the likes of Mathieu Kassievtiz, Todd Haynes, Bob Rafelson, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mischa Barton, Beau Bridges, Vanessa Bauche, Christian Duguay, Denise Filiatrault, Katie Holmes, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Pierce Brosnan, Christopher Plummer, Dominic Michel, Wesley Snipes, Nastasia Kinski, Michel Brault, Brian McKenna, Richard Attenborough, Denys Arcand, Stephan Gaghan, and Robert Downey Jr., among many others.
