About me
Maria Garcia is a costume designer, director and live artist, whose work spans film, theatre, live performance art and music videos. She is a member of the Costume Designers Guild (CDG), IA Local 892. Maria has designed for Theatre of the Oppressed companies like the award winning Cardboard Citizens, and made her film debut on Streetwise Opera’s “The Answer to Everything” which premiered at the BFI Southbank in the UK. Writer Director Jessica Brunetto’s film ‘Sisters,’ which premiered at SXSW 2021 and was nominated for the Grand Jury Award was costume designed by Maria. Her costume and performance play is inventive and resourceful, often drawing on her background in devised theater and carnival arts. In addition to her work as a designer, Maria has costume supervised productions by the English Touring Opera, English National Ballet and Seven Sisters. In 2013, Seven Sisters’ “Like A Fish Out of Water,” designer Sophie Jump won the overall Gold Medal at World Stage Design. Maria costume supervised the production. While in the UK, Maria collaborated with Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2009 Best Design award winner theater designer and performance maker Mamoru Iriguchi on several of his live art works including “Into the Skirt”, which premiered at Mousonturm’s Plateaux Festival (commission) in Frankfurt Germany and “One Man Show” (Place Prize commission) in London. Maria has worked in the U.S. since 2014 where she has costume designed theater and dance productions by Laurel Jenkins, Chankethya Chey, Lionel Popkin, Alexx Shilling, Carol McDowell and for her own work. Her first performance art work, “Moon River” was co-created with Portuguese Artist Catarina Moreno and has been shown in the UK and U.S. Garcia's “Impart: Scenes of Abjection”, premiered at Highways Performance Space in 2017. Maria’s “Laocoön with Cabiria at 9,” with choreographer and performer Samantha Mohr, cinematographer Wes Cardino and musician Grace Freeman, premiered at REDCAT’s NOW Festival in January 2021 and was an official selection at the London International Web and Shorts Film Festival, 2021. In September 2021, Garcia directed and costume designed Gal Musette’s official music video for her song “Julia.” Maria’s interdisciplinary investigations often center around death, ‘liveness,’ migration and refuge, and feature kinetic/alive costumes, projection, noise, and movement.
