Saudade: Food As Home

2012, 28 minutes

A look at how food preserves culture and maintains community for the Brazilian Diaspora in the United States.

Food equals family as it equals community, which equals cultural identity, stability, and personal pride. Therefore, as people create new forms of community wherever they may settle, usually amid other groups of immigrants who too are trying to find their feet again, food remains the one constant in the otherwise uncertainty of life for the new arrivals. The Brazilian Diaspora in the United States is one such example of this community; one with a history not only of emigration from their birthplace, but also of a way to preserve the dignity of their culture's cuisine and preparation methods when they arrive in their new home.
