Audition Hell

I've just got back from a casting where I had to sing. Not a problem normally as I used to sing in a band and can hold a note. I got through the first round (very X Factor) and got to the second stage. All good so far.

For some unknown reason I decided to sing the main audition piece in a key higher than I have ever sung anything since my balls went South....Needless to say, I screwed up. I'd love to see the video playback if only to see the fear and terror in my eyes as I was halfway through the piece and realised that without a vice or a couple of house bricks there was no chance of me ever hitting the final "big" note....

Feel free to laugh heartily at my expense and then submit your own horror stories. Don't be shy :o)

I have such a big phobia about singing in auditions and the one and only singing audition I had was so bad I sat afterwards at the bus stop outside and quietly wept. I knew I would have to sing and had prepared so so much, extra singing lessons, backing tape in the right key etc and yet it just all went horribly wrong, like a car crash in slow motion. I was so nervous about the singing bit I just couldnt get it together on my speech and then the god awfull singing came and jesus it makes me shudder at the memory of it, just awfull with me thinking if I dance a bit it would cover up the horrendous noise coming out of my mouth. big mistake. So I just ended up looking like a wailing crazy dancing sweating from the stress and nerves crazy woman. needless to say they thanked me for coming and I swiftly left to recieve my rejection email in my inbox by the time I got home. A singer I am not.

Yes it was, Robert. Sadly after my efforts today I would suggest that the next time I see it will be from the comfort of my living room :o(

Sorry to hear it didn't go so well mate.

It's a weird feeling watching jobs you went for but didn't get. But hey, it's gonna happen to all of us, more than once. I've seen tons of ads air that I didn't get, and have that initial "Grr...you've got my buyout there" feeling.

In fact, I just found out one of the jobs I shot will never air becaues the client doesn't like it. Yeh, I was disappointed, but that's the way it is.

As soon as you leave the audition room, forget the audition forever. It's the only way to deal.

Ah...the spectre of self doubt and that creeps in after every failed audition.

I have screwed up more auditions than you would believe...damn, you have met me so that line isn't going to work, is it??

I walk away from every audition thinking that I didn't do my best, I could have delivered certain lines differently, I could have learned the script better, I could have started the song in the correct key, etc. so if the phone rings a few days later and I got the part it's a pleasant surprise.

At least your only down 7 quid if you screw up...I've got 3 auditions next week (Coventry, London & Glasgow) if I screw up I'm down 150 quid and you all know how much we Sweaties hate wasting money.

Stay positive Mike, next time it will be a global buyout, you'll sail through it with flying colours and the fee will finance your next 2 years worth of failed auditions. :-))

Despite several years experience as a performer I have comparatively limited experience of auditions. At this period I actually see auditions as just an opportunity to develop my skills and meet directors. I actually enjoy them at this stage. I think this might change as time goes on. I have had a couple of auditions where I was slightly puzzled why I was picked for them in the first place and deep down didnt think they were very suitable. Nevertheless I have used them to gain experience and entered into the spirit of things.

It just goes to show that we never really have a clue at auditions.....I've just got back from a week filming the commercial in the Lake District and Manchester. You think you have a good audition and the phone never rings. You come out thinking it's a stinker and you get the gig!

Thank mate. I don't know about being the face of the AA - there were a couple of awesome singers who will definitely be the new face of the AA - but it was certainly an interesting experience.

(in fact I said the agent are you sure thay have seen my pics!!) so I swallowed my pride and thought of the money hehe

What can I say! At least you get to go to auditions. I'm damned! I was asked by a Director to study a script (44 pages long)

I was told that she was going to get in touch with the audition dates. then I get an email saying the usual crap. Another day I receive another email by the same director telling me that she will hold auditions by 15th December. Today!

I just feel like an idiot, I studied the whole thing for nothing. I didn't even get a chance to go to the audition. So why did she send the script in the first place?

I met most of the criteria for the role. She wanted an actress with an Italian accent, which I have. So I really dont know why I wasn't called.

I call this pre-audition hell! Lol

God I hate that! When you are reading a post thinking yeah this looks great, I meet the criteria and then you read a little further down and the audition is at 3pm that day in Leeds or something! great if you are in Leeds, not so great if your in London!

When i first moved to London, my main reason for the move was to tread the boards and pursue my acting career! After several months of not even getting a foot through the door to audition I was willing to give anything ago. I noticed in The Stage that a few Panto auditions were starting so i sent of my stuff.

A couple of weeks later I get a call from a Company "We are calling to invite you to audition for our pantomime Dick Whittington, we require you to bring a short humorous monologue and a up tempo song with sheet music" I accepted and took down the details the audition was to be held in Clapham, so it wasn't far to go!! Only one problem "Sheet Music", not being trained as a singer I did not own any sheet music! In fact the only singing I'm used to is on Karaoke!

I quickly called my friend as I new she would have some music I could borrow! Only trouble was I did not know any of the songs well enough, it was looking as though I was going to have cancel the first audition I had got for months, until she produced a copy of "Sandra Dee" from Grease. (Not the best song to sing as it has been used a million times before, please bear this in mind) My eyes lit up at once, "I know that one" I screamed in delight!! Of course I had never sung it with a piano, only with a backing track. How hard can it be? I thought, very! I later found out!

The Audition: I got to the audition in plenty of time, I was all geared up and ready to impress! I entered the room to be faced with a panel of 4 and a pianist, the hall was big and echoed.

"What song are you going to sing for us today?"

Suddenly the nerves started to kick in "Erm Sandra Dee from Grease"

With a smirk across her face and in a very sarcastic tone the lady said "Hmmm I haven't heard that one in a while".

Sweating slightly now I neared the piano and handed over my music, the pianist looked at it and then at me, he gestured for me to come towards him, "A word of advice, next time you go to a singing audition, tape the pages together!"

Of course I thought to myself, I had given him single sheets, that meant he would have to swap the sheets over mid song, and so he did!

"Look at me I'm Sandra Dee" (BIG HUGE PAUSE) "Lousy with Vir…………..HUGE PAUSE ginity" and so the song went on.

That was bad I thought to myself but at least I have my monologue, I'll be fine with that acting is what I do best!

"We have decided that we no longer require your monologue, we want you to read these two pieces of script instead"

No monologue, typical the one thing was good at, well I should be ok at the script reading, or maybe not!

"Hello everybody my name is Dick, Dick Withington, I mean Withington,"

"No, its Whittington not Withington" This just kept circling in my head I knew what I had to say but I just couldn't say it; it couldn't possibly get any worse.

"If you'd like to take a seat, do you have a driving licence?"
"Yes, I mean no, I mean yes I do but I don't have a car"

"That's ok; we provide a car and insurance"

"Well the thing is I don't drive because I haven't driven since I passed my test, and I wouldn't feel comfortable driving really"

"Well what if you had to"

"Erm no not really, I mean No"

"Why not?"

"Erm just because… because… look I just wouldn't want to I had an accident and haven't driven since and that was 5 years ago"

"I see, well thank you"

And that was the end of that, not the best audition but not the worst. I got home talked to my housemate about it, we decided that I should stick with acting and give the singing a miss.

That was all well and good until I got a phone call a week later from an agency I had sent my CV to ages ago, I hadn't heard from them before and they rang me totally out of blue offering me a private panto audition. Again I had to provide a song with sheet music, this time explained that I knew one song "Sandra Dee" from Grease; she said that was fine as it was only panto and nothing to serious. The audition was in Pimlico just around the corner from was I living, perfect. I photo copied the sheets together at work in preparation; I was not going to make the same mistake twice.

Audition Number Two: I turned up like before ready to make the most of it and impress, I gave in my name and was handed some company information. I sat down amongst the other hopefuls and looked at the sheet, that's when I saw it staring up at me in big bold print,Oh God I thought, it can't be, I slowly walked up to the man who signed me in and as quietly as I could "Excuse me; I've already auditioned for this".

"No you can't have done!"

"Yes I have, last week in Clapham"

"Oh, I see erm well you'd best wait there for a minute while I go and find out what to do".

By this point all eyes are on me, and I am a dark shade of red. The man hurriedly returned from the audition room, "Well they just said you can stay and re audition or go, it's up to you"

"Right ok, I'm not sure"

"You should go in again, like a second chance" said the girl sat next me, "Do you think so?" I asked, "Yes defiantly" said another girl, "What you singing?" another one asked, "Erm Sandra Dee from Grease" I said, slightly nervous by all the questioning, "Oh" said the girl looking down her nose at me, "and" she went on "what did you sing last time?", "Sandra Dee from Grease", "Oh dear" said the girl, "Is that really bad then?" I asked, already knowing the answer was yes, but desperately seeking some good news.

"Ok your up" Called the man who had signed me in. Right girl just go in their and give some, I told myself. I entered the room stomach churning, and there they were staring right at me.

"Hello Again" said the familiar voice, "I'm so sorry about all this" I blabbered on about the mix, as they sat and stared in silence.

"What are you going to sing for us today?" there it was again the dreaded question, I took a hard gulp, "Sandra Dee from Grease" I said, "But I have taped the pages together this time" I added, hoping that this would make alright!

By this point I was so flustered and embarrassed I didn't know if I was coming or going, the piano introduction came in and was totally not ready, I tried to sing but the words came out wrong. Now this is quite an achievement in it's self considering it was a song from Grease, a film I've seen a million and one times and know inside out and back to front.

"Thank you" Said the lady in a sharp tone, I had only song 3 lines. "Read this" she said shoving the tiniest script in my hand. I read it as quickly as I could. "You don't drive do you?" she asked "No" I said, "Well thank you".

And that was that, I practically ran out of the room, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, either way I was close to tears. "Where's the way out" I asked the man who had signed me in, "Up their and to your right" he called after me. I was desperate to get out of the room, pushing and pulling at the door I found that it would not budge; I couldn't believe it the damn thing would not open. The last thing I wanted to do was go back down there and face all those people, but I had no other choice.

"Excuse me I can't open the door to get out" I said in a sheepish voice, the man lead me up the stairs, I pointed to the door and showed him! "That's because you're trying to open the wrong door, I said to the right not left!"

He opened the door and I ran out as fast as I could, I held back the tears and started laughing instead, of all the things to happen and it had to happen to me. I phoned my friend and he laughed so hard, all I could say in my defence was, "Well I'm not really a singer".

wowww what a story!

Have any of you seen the new ad in E4 with the tree/Adam & Eve? It's for Jaffa Orange.

I couldn't believe it when I saw who they picked as the girl! A model, a beautiful, perfect being!

I felt so humiliated when I watched this add! When I applied for the role and went to the audition I was told they wanted "normal looking girls" not MODELS!!!!!

I had to drive to Portsmouth for almost nothing! I hate it when they say they want one thing and they end up getting something else. GGRRRRRR!

I still feel like crap! I'm not worth it... but then I'm not a model darling!

I've been singing 'Sandra Dee' all morning....

I went to a commercial casting a couple of years back and was confronted with a room full of guys who all looked just like me (i.e. devastatingly handsome....ok....they were all bald). Audition went well and I got a phone call next day from my agent - "you're heavily pencilled in". I didn't get the gig but what flabbered my gast was that when the ad aired the guy had a full head of hair.

Just goes to show, eh?

OK heres my story. I went for a commercial last year for toilet paper!!! I had to be 40 year old man who lives with his Mum. I had to be interviewed in character then we did some small scenes. It went OK, I get a call about two weeks later to tell me I am heavily pencilled and it is between me and another Guy. I am kept on hold for about 4 weeks. I do a lot of extra work, but I am turning this all down because the ad was worth thousands and was filming abroad. When I chase four days before filming and I am still pencilled, then later that day, I get a call to tell me they have released me. The agent said to me 'well at least it got you noticed', which I took with a pinch of salt at the time, but a few months ago I went for a casting for a commercial walk on, with the same casting director, and got the job. of course this was not so well paid, but none the less its all swings and roundabouts I guess. I had an audition about a year ago...

It was a day long thing with a workshop in the morning and audition pieces in the afternoon. I had spent the morning feeling very good about how things had gone and I was confident with my monologues. We were told during the morning that they were making up the afternoons audition panel with a variety of people including an actor they had worked with before. I thought that was a really good idea as I felt that they were surely going to understand the pressures of auditions and the opportunities they do (or don't) provide!

I walked in for my speeches only to see who the actor was. I'd spent my evening before watching a show in a studio space on the front row. The guy who was on the panel was the lead, and it was a very good show - He played a part where the guy had lost his marbles and had a mid-life crisis/breakdown - he'd spent the vast majority of the second half (at least an hour) standing about a metre away from me stark naked - hiding nothing! I don't have any issues with it, I was comfortable with my sexuality/masculinity or whatever, as it was for artisitic purposes. But come the following day, there's me stood in a room feeling nervous already, and I find myself starting a conversation with the guy and digging myself further and further into a very dark place.

In the end I was so preoccupied by how I'd handled everything so badly my very confident audition speeches went terribly wrong. Needless to say, the phone never went.
