One of the biggest hurdles to moving your career forward is finding eyeballs for your work. What do you do to get your work out there? How to you create buzz and find an audience for your film?

Many of my films have a social issue (the arms trade, veterans, the environment). In the past I have partnered with organizations, or social groups that support the same message as the film. They help get the word out to their followers in exchange for credit or services. I've been able to reach a very wide audience this way.

My two cents. I can't speak about big results yet, only at a tiny scale. I've been producing and directing my first documentary since 2015 on the side (I'm actually a sound mixer) so, when I realized I didn't have an audience I decided to go all-in on social media and designed a plan for a Youtube Channel and a Facebook Page that launched around 10 months ago... and they took a life of their own. Some people already knows my style and are fairly active, specially on FB because I post something there every day, but it's definitely not a short term goal, which is ok because my film needs a few more months to complete, and in the mean time I can explore my creativity and see "real time" reactions so I can fine tune the tone of this films and also note ideas for future projects. My approach is to capture one person at a time and slowly seduce them and not try to reach the biggest audience posible all at once overnight. Time will say whether this works or not. I'm in no rush.
