We’re looking for an organized and enthusiastic Supervising Producer to join our management group, dedicated to supporting managers, producers and creators.The Supervising Producer is based out of The Times offices on 620 Eighth Avenue in New York City, where we share workspace with the Times Audio team.You will work with the Executive Producer to organize the smooth planning, production, and release of Opinion podcasts. This person should be familiar with how to staff a show and a department, set up workflows and processes and supervise teams of producers and editors.Experience in producing podcasts or live radio is encouraged, but candidates who have worked in other forms of production would do well in this position, too. Though our current slate of shows are weekly or twice-weekly, a metabolism for news and a sense of what’s relevant to listeners is essential.While you will work closely with the Opinion editorial teams, this role is not particularly editorial-intensive. The Supervising Producer will focus more on operations, requiring a strong capacity for logistics and planning/scheduling, particularly in the early years as we grow our staff and develop new shows. Therefore, we’re looking for a high-level problem solver with exceptional organizational skills who takes pride and joy in their ability to keep multiple, complex projects humming right along. The Supervising Producer is helping to build and grow a new department and support a team of excited, opinionated, dynamic podcast producers, and encourage a culture of experimentation, mutual support and editorial excellence.The right candidate will be excited by that opportunity and comfortable with the culture that comes with working in an enterprising, dynamic environment. You will report to the Executive Producer of Opinion Audio.Responsibilities include:Establishing production plans and processes for teams and showsMaking staffing recommendations to build a diverse and talented teamHelping showrunners set expectations and structure their staffCoordinating with Executive Producer and senior producers on editorial and production needs for new show developmentRecruiting and hiring an eclectic and innovative pool of audio producers, engineers, editors and researchersWorking with senior management across NYT Audio to coordinate back-filling, communication and workflow across departmentsAssisting in building an on-boarding system for new hires, in collaboration with other NYT Audio teamsOversee training and skills development for employees, also in collaboration with other NYT Audio teamsDeveloping communication, support and operations systems within and across show teamsWith Executive Producer and NYT Audio Ops teams, coordinate with NYT marketing, audience development, and advertising teams for all Opinion showsSkills and Qualifications:Dedication to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and innovative environmentStrong people management skills, with experience in racial and gender equity workA passion for the making of podcasts and new forms of storytellingExcellent written and verbal communication skillsFamiliarity with the processes of podcast production, including but not limited to studio and remote recording, writing for audio, and ProTools productionCollaborative spirit is a mustA metabolism for news and a sense of what’s relevant to listeners is essentialEmpathy, both for subjects and co-workers; in these complicated times, schedules, homelife, family situations, and more are in constant flux. It’s important, within this supervisory capacity, to be flexible and understandingExperience:The ideal candidate has 7+ years of experience as a producer or senior-level manager in newsroom, audio, video or other multimedia production. Previous experience producing and launching podcasts preferred.Experience in producing podcasts, live radio, or other forms of productionPassion for journalism, the mission of The Times, and a curiosity in the rapidly evolving media landscapeProficient at digital tools such as Google Sheets, AirTable and CMSKnowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standardsExperience hiring and managing a team
