Held annually since 1956 (apart from 2020), the Eurovision Song Contest is an international song competition organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) which features participants representing primarily European countries. Each participating country submits an original song to be performed on live television, with competing countries’ viewers and jurys then casting votes for the other countries' songs to determine a winner.
The contest has been a staple in wider-European culture since its inauguration, with 52 countries having participated at least once. Eurovision Song Contest ranks among the world's most watched non-sporting events every year, with hundreds of millions of viewers globally (in the mid-to-late 1980s the contest attracted a peak of 600 million viewers).
Eurovision has launched the careers of numerous musicians, and some of the most recognisable acts include: ABBA, Duncan Laurence, Netta, Eleni Foureira, Jamala, Måns Zelmerlöw, Conchita Wurst, Loreen, Alexander Rybak, Dima Bilan, Lordi, Helena Paparizou, Dana International, Katrina and the Waves, Bobbysocks!, Sandie Shaw, Brotherhood of Man, Johnny Logan, Bucks Fizz, Céline Dion and many more.
